Health, Dental, and Vision

Providence College offers full-time employees the choice of either individual or family plan health coverage through Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI’s network Healthmate Coast-to-Coast.  Dental coverage is offered through Delta Dental of Rhode Island.  In addition, full-time employees may choose a voluntary vision plan through EyeMed.

Health Costs

The employee and the College share the cost of both medical and dental coverage.  The employee pays 100% of the cost for vision coverage.

Employee contributions are made through a payroll deduction, either before-tax (through the Section 125 Plan) or after-tax.  Vision plan contributions are available only as a before-tax option.

Enrollment

An employee may choose to enroll, re-elect or waive medical, dental, and/or vision coverage only during the annual open enrollment period that occurs toward the end of each Plan Year.  The addition of eligible dependents and/or new family members is permitted for qualifying life events, provided the Office of Human Resources is notified of the change within a 30-day period.

Qualifying life event examples are:  newly eligible employee (such as a new hire), loss or gain of coverage elsewhere, marriage/divorce, birth or adoption of a child, loss of a dependent.  Please note this is not a complete list of examples.  Contact the Office of Human Resources at 401-865-2341 with any questions about qualifying life events.

Married spouses and qualified child dependents may be covered on an employee’s plan.  Proof of dependent status is required.

Buyout Option

An eligible employee who elects to waive coverage under the College’s medical and/or dental group insurance plans receives a buyout refund of $1400 and/or $165 respectively for each year that participation is waived (requires proof of other insurance). The buyout amount(s) are processed through the payroll system, prorated by pay cycle (bi-weekly or month), and are subject to Federal and State withholding taxes.  Proof of other medical coverage must be provided.
